Why I think Photoshop sucks!

As a photographer I have lost count of the number of times people have asked me if I can just "photoshop" something; make them three sizes smaller, get rid of a whole person in the photo, photoshop a smile on to someone, the list goes on. I generally smile & explain that it's more about flattering posing, getting it right in camera and remembering that it's real moments I capture.

But on the inside I am usually screaming with frustration! And no, not at my clients, but at society, technology & media for educating people to believe that fake is great, that anything can be photoshopped with ease, that we're all meant to be flawless size 6 model material and that we're not good enough just as we are!

I know what it's like to be self-conscious, to wish I saw a better version looking back at me in the mirror. And then I remember all the things I am grateful for, that I love me just as I am & that I'm proud to exist in photos because it is my personality shines through, not the flaws!

My first priority is to make sure my clients relax in front of the camera. I want to create timeless images that capture real, beautiful moments. This can never happen when my subjects are being self-conscious or worrying about how they look. I give my clients tips on how to feel great in front of the camera and it's my job as a photographer to ensure they let go of any insecurities and just be themselves, because that is when I capture magic!

Obviously I'd be a liar if I pretended that I never use photoshop (of course I'll get rid of that pimple!), but the kind of photography I am capturing is the kind that is natural and full of beautiful emotion, not plastic.

So I beg of you, please stop believing that you need Photoshop to look perfect in a photo, stop thinking you need to lose a bit more weight before you have family photos taken. Because there is nothing more important than being in the moment right now, there is nothing more precious than self-love and you are beautiful, perfect and amazing just the way you are! xxx
