The story of how we met

On engagement shoots I often ask couples how they met, and I realised I have never shared our own "how we met" story on the blog...

I laugh every time I think back to how we first really met, like our very first encounter many many months before we even started dating (and back then it was called "going out"). I can't recall exactly when our first encounter happened, but I think I would have been 16 and Matt 19.

Matt worked at the local garage where Dad took his vehicles for warrants. This particular time Dad took the caravan in for a warrant check and I happened to be with him. I remember sitting in the front seat of the car with headphones in, totally lost in the pages of a novel (picture a relatively nerdy adolescent!). To check the caravan over it had to be backed into the workshop. I obviously wasn't paying much attention but Dad hopped out of the driver's seat and in jumped this big guy with broad shoulders and dreads that went half way down his back!

I took one look at him and promptly got out of the car!

I make out like I was scared of him, but more truthfully it was probably just a shock - although I obviously didn't want to share the confined space of a car with him!!! And that was my very first encounter with Matt. 😂
I remember Dad referring to this guy as that mechanic with ropes in his head! And they were pretty decent dreads; Matt had been growing them for a few years.

Here's a photo of us a couple of weeks into "dating". Back in the days of flip phones and 1 megapixel cameras! God that makes me sound old!

I'm not sure how many months after our initial brief meeting that we actually properly met, nor how many months later again before we started dating. But I will always remember the 5th of August 2007 - because Matt blew off his little brother's birthday party to take me on a date! Sorry Phill!!!

So when we often hear couples tell us "oh there's nothing glamorous or romantic about how we first met"... well we totally get you! I think we can safely take out the award for most un-romantic, anything but "love-at-first-sight" how we met story! I might have been petrified at the sight of him initially, but this guy has become my best friend and I wouldn't trade the last 10 years of being his girl with anything in the world.x
