Printed Portrait Products

I think it's important, no matter what you sell, to believe whole-heartedly in the products you are selling. While I could sell tonnes of different products & have a pricelist filled with options galore, I'm the kind of person that gets overwhelmed with too many options, so I decided to keep it simple for & put on my portrait pricelist select quality products that I LOVE selling.

After the portrait session and once I've processed & edited the final images, my portrait clients come into the studio to see their portraits - I present the images as a slideshow on the big TV screen, then over coffee we sit down and discuss what they would like to do with their portraits.
Here's a line up of the beautiful printed portrait options...

Probably the aspect I am most proud of when it comes to my products are the prints. I do my own colour-correct printing on archival papers using archival ink. Each time I print photographs I stop & stare at them coming off the printer, watching the images come to life - seeing your work printed to a high quality is the BEST feeling. I feel like it's often forgotten in today's world that the true form of a photograph is a print.

This year when I decided to print my own competition images I was nervous about how the printing would be benchmarked - so to  not only come away with awards, but also a judge's comment that the printing was beautiful had me feeling overjoyed.

Loose prints are a great option if you already have a frame you want to use or for gifting to family members.

The next logical step with printed portraits is framing them. I offer a few framing options including different frame styles & colours and also the choice of collage frames or singular. A popular choice is the triptych frame (above right). And easily the most popular frame colour is white. It's such a clean, timeless framing option and I think it perfectly matches my style of portraiture. But I also offer black, distressed and natural wood styles too.

I've recently changed to a non-reflective glass in my frames which are made to order by a NZ framing company. The non-reflective glass gives the effect like there's no glass in the frame and it takes away that glare you so often get when viewing frames which distracts from the photograph.

I do all the framing of my prints here in studio, using acid free framing & mounting materials to ensure the prints stand the test of time. While the frames I stock are a mid-range frame, I am happy to upgrade clients to museum quality UV glass & bespoke framing moulds if they wish, however the price increases significantly with custom-framing.

My motto with canvases is to go BIG. And by big I mean either; a decent sized canvas or a collage of multiple canvases. Canvases look great as features on the wall, as statement pieces. We have a huge 30x40 inch canvas on our living room feature wall and when I replace that photograph one day, I'm going to go even bigger. I've never heard anyone tell me they wish they'd got a smaller canvas!

These three canvases (above) are on the wall of my studio and act as a visual aid for my clients when they're comparing sizes. I also encourage clients to send me a photo of their wall if they have a space in mind they'd like to display their portraits - that way I can give them an idea of what size would work best.

Hands down albums are my favourite portrait product! This is probably because I love the story-telling ability you have with an album and being able to present a series or collection of images together. I love that you can sit down and flick through the beautiful artisan pages of imagery that bring back memories and emotions. I love the gorgeous linen cover choices and the texture of the fine-art pages in my hands.

Albums are a great option for those that don't have heaps of wall space, or those who cherish watching their children's faces light up as they look through the photo albums of their childhood.

I generally stick to two styles of portrait albums although there are SO many beautiful options. Our first album is the classic photo-book style with luxurious 'eggshell' textured fine-art pages. The second album is what is called a flushmount style where the pages are rigid fine-art card stock. Both albums are custom designed and come in your choice of cover material and colour.

Last but certainly not least are my boxed sets of matted prints. A buckram pearl-finish box with a book-style flip lid and complete with a satin ribbon to lift out the fine-art matted prints inside. The matting enclosure around each print protects the print and makes them also ready to pop into off-the-shelf size frames if you wish.

The boxes hold 10 matted prints - ready to frame, gift to loved ones, or simply to treasure & enjoy like you would an album. I personally like the idea of having it as a coffee table piece and being able to get your images out to show friends & family when they visit because I just love holding fine-art prints up close. The boxset of prints is a versatile option for storing and enjoying your portraits.

Folio boxes come in two options; 10 or 20. The boxset of 20 comes in a leather frame display box. I print your chosen favourites for the folio box on stunning archival photo papers.

I love knowing that the products I offer are of a high-quality and are at a level that can not be brought off-the-shelf which means my clients are going home with products just as special as the portraits themselves.

Printing my own work...

25/9/2016

If you're on my Snapchat you're probably sick of all the snaps of my new printer! I've had the Canon Pro 1 in my office since late August and I am seriously in L-O-V-E !

Being the geek I am, I'd researched this printer for months. I have an awesome professional print guy in the North Island who I've been with since getting serious about quality prints a few years ago and I didn't see the point in investing in a printer of my own when I was so happy with the results & service from him. But when Canon offered up a ridiculous deal on this printer I really had to do the math. Nowadays I am doing more & more prints for my clients and the convenience, turnaround and control I have with printing myself has huge advantages.

The first realisation that came with this printer is that the responsibility is all on me now. I have to keep papers + ink tanks in stock and if I get a print wrong I foot the bill directly. And a full set of ink tanks had me in a bit of a sweat when I had to click confirm on that transaction! Time will tell just how cost-effective this operation is but I've done the maths and the accountant gave it the tick of approval ;-) ha!

The joy I felt when I saw the first lot of prints come out of the printer is hard to describe. Being able to create something from start to finish makes me very proud and I think it will be many prints yet before the excitement of watching prints being made before my eyes wears off!
