It's that time of year again! Seriously how did it go SO fast?! We've shot 18 beautiful weddings this year with 18 awesome couples! 2017 has been an epic year for Heidi Horton Photography and I know I say that every year but it just keeps getting better and each year I fall more & more in love with my job.
With all those beautiful weddings comes a fair amount of behind-the-scenes footage! We often take a few shots of one another working on a wedding day and over the course of a year it amounts to a lot of evidence of just how much fun we have as a husband & wife team and it provides a bit of an idea of what a wedding day looks like from our perspective.
This is one of our most popular blogs of the year and I just love putting this blog together! The photos bring back memories of all the beautiful wedding days we've been a part of. There's so many photos that make me laugh out loud and a fair amount of them that make me cringe when I see my unflattering posture and facial expressions - yikes! I can't believe I'm posting some of these! 😂 But more than anything these photos remind me of the love I have for what we do, the gratitude for our couples in choosing us and also how much I love working with Matt!
This year we've travelled to just about all the corners of Southland and Otago photographing awesome couples. We were even pretty lucky to do an engagement shoot on a mountain top in Queenstown! And Matt got to come along for the ride which hardly ever happens!
But most of the time on engagement shoots, Matt just carries the bags and plays with the dogs.
We both just love it when the camera gets pointed at us! We're not awkward at all, in fact we're pretty photogenic really...
We like to play this game called 'you take a photo of me, taking a photo of you'.
This year we also continued on with our game of who can take the worst photo of the other.
Sadly I feel like Matt has taken out this year yet again, with this stunner of me.
But don't worry, facial expressions aside we're pretty good at our jobs.
Not only do we take decent photos, but we're also hilarious too.
Matt's great with the blokes.
That's when he's not getting down on the candy bar!
Besides being an awesome second shooter, Matt's an expert at making sure veils and dress trains are just right for the photos.
He'll be my sun-stopper or even carry the veil when the bride gets sick of it!
And he features regularly as my lighting and test subject.
We both have a go at being test subjects for the cake-cutting photo!
And we're as bad as each other when it comes to photobombing!
In saying that though, Matt's very good at playing hide and seek.
Meanwhile my talents include an attention to detail, ensuring all parts of your day are beautifully captured.
You can often find me standing atop my trusty step (or anything from a chair to a rock) to gain a bit of height. #shortgirlproblems
But then sometimes I'll switch it up and get low.
Like right on the ground.
I've also been known to go barefoot or swap heels for jandals on location.
But most of the time I'm actually very lady-like...
Seriously though, we love what we do and the awesome locations we get to go with our couples.
"They want a third wheel in their epic mountain shot right?!"
We love the people we get to connect with and the memories we get to capture for them.
We love the awesome fellow wedding vendors we work alongside, from videographers...
...to Matt's favourite celebrant. 😂 Love ya Sharyn!
Now I don't know whether you realised but we also have a whole crew of assistants to help us capture the day. 😉
All jokes aside wedding photography is an awesome gig - it's a very social job, we get to be part of our couples' celebrations and capture so many beautiful moments. But it is a high energy, fast-paced job too and I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved this year, how well we work together and the fun we have.
We don't feature in many behind-the-scenes photos together but I manage to sneak the odd one in.
And we do love a good photobooth!
This shot with Mel & Kieran is a definite favourite and is proof that as weird, awkward & crazy as we are (I probably speak for myself here, more than Matt), our couples still love us at the end of the day!
(Goal for 2018: get a photo with each of our couples!).
A very big thank you to Matt for being my business partner, awesome second shooter and the best friend a girl could ever wish for. And hugs of gratitude to all our amazing couples for trusting us with photographing your beautiful weddings (looking at some of these photos anyone would wonder why you do trust us! 😜). xoxo
On a wedding day we often snap a few behind the scenes photos while we're working. Last year's blog post was hugely popular & I realised that these photos are a way to give a little insight into our job as photographers and how much fun we have.
2016 has seen us shoot so many awesome weddings & we actually still have one more wedding left to look forward to this year, just after Christmas! We've made heaps of amazing friends along the way & going through these BTS photos brings back all the memories of these weddings. I can't thank our past, present and future clients enough for being the reason I get to do what I love for a living. 😘
And now I present to you: 2016 Behind-The-Scenes...complete with plenty of awkwardness, bad facials, terrible posture and a year's worth of fun!
Matt: best second shooter and partner in crime a girl could wish for!
He makes a superb umbrella holder...
And a smooth veil holder.
He let's me use him as a model to test the light.
And Matt will just love that I included this bouquet shot on the blog!
In all seriousness though, I believe this guy is the secret to our success. He's an incredibly supportive husband & business partner, he takes awesome photos, he's great with people and I love spending wedding days working alongside him.
Besides Matt, I actually employ a whole team of assistant photographers too! This is some of my crew here.
This next series taken by Matt shall be entitled "The back of Heidi's head".
We've been a part of a few styled shoots, each of them put together by incredible teams of creatives!
I find it amusing some of the positions and stances I find myself in when taking photos.
For a short girl I spend a lot of time trying to be even shorter! And what is with crossing my legs?!
I do love my handy dandy ladder!
Barefoot shooting. Yip it's a thing.
At the start of the year Matt & I began a wee game of who can capture the worst photo of one another's facial expressions (it's gruesome!). Let's start with the nicer ones first...
Unfortunately I think Matt takes out top prize with this stunner of me 😩. I can't quite believe I'm even sharing it!
We also love to photobomb each other's shot occasionally.
Speaking of photobombers, the 2016 award definitely goes to Mark. For someone who told me he's not keen on photos - he sure ended up featuring in a lot...
Sometimes we just hold our cameras and stand around. And don't even ask what Matt is doing in that hut...😂
Other things you might find us doing on a wedding day include playing with the dog.
Matt the photographer / mechanic fixing the wedding car.
Me getting helicopter rides, (this is a slight sore point for Matt).
Even featuring in a photo or two with the guests - especially when the 'guest' is family!
I love this photo right here (thank you Debbie!). Mel you're stunning my friend!
Okay...back to us actually doing our job as photographers 😜.
Surely by now you've worked out that I have a favourite dress...?!
The concentration face.
Getting the details just right.
A massive thank you to all the couples, bridal parties, families and friends who have been a part of our journey this year. So many beautiful weddings, new friendships and good memories! xxx
Last weekend we shot the last wedding of 2015 and Marty & Gemma's wedding was the perfect day to round out the 2015 wedding season!
This year has been an epic year for Heidi Horton Photography and has seen us shoot a total of 10 fabulous weddings. If you've followed our journey on the blog, you'll have seen just how awesome each of these weddings were & how awesome our clients are. What I cannot emphasise enough is how much of an absolute privilege it has been to document these weddings and to make so many new friends!
As I looked back on the year, I compiled some of the photos we've taken behind-the-scenes & I thought this is actually a cool way to show you how much fun we have on a wedding day & just how much I love my job!
Taking photos of each other taking photos...it never gets old!
That time my couple helicoptered up to Jackson Peak for photos!
And I have another helicopter ride coming up this summer too! Did I mention I love my job?!!
We have photographed weddings at some amazing locations this year! From lakefront at Pisa Moorings to overlooking the mountain ranges at Fiordland Lodge and even at the beautiful chapel at Hawthorn Den outside of Gore where we actually got married!
I wouldn't be the photographer I am without this guy! He pushes me forward, gives me courage to dream and he's the best darn second shooter I could dream of. I told him just last week that he needs to stop improving his skills so fast because otherwise I'll end up being second shooter for him soon ;-)
He will probably curse at me putting all these photos of him on the blog...ummm I love you babe!
As well as being an awesome second shooter, he's the perfect lighting test model.
And he's an ace at carrying all our gear!
Me in my element.
I'm not going to pretend it's not fun dressing up for weddings! I'm always on the look out for comfortable dresses and heels (because I'm a shorty and in heels I feel like a professional). And I think I need to extend Matt's shirt collection - he seems to have picked a favourite this season ;-)
It's embarrassing some of facial expressions Matt manages to capture...
I shall call this my "on a mission" face.
I'm pretty sure I was actually smiling here, but it kinda looks like I'm in pain.
This is my "it's so bright out here!" face :-)
This year I've fixed hair-ups on location, I've carried flowers, held flutes of champagne and made sure cathedral veils don't blow away in the wind. It's all part of my service ;-)
This was just last weekend, but I have no idea what I was doing here! No one was paying attention anyway...
And this is what happens when photographers try to take selfies with their big cameras!
So that's a wrap for 2015. What an epic year of weddings, all thanks to our amazing couples for the privilege to document their amazing days!
I am so excited for the fun & adventures 2016 will bring us!
